How does CareerNumbers obtain career and compensation information?

We use publicly available data as well as information provided by our members. We also aggregate all of the information provided by our members since this helps ensure that the information we provide is reliable and anonymous.

How accurate is the career and compensation information?

Our goal is to provide our members with relevant and reliable information that helps them make informed career decisions. Accordingly, it is important that you are aware of the factors that impact the reliability of our information, such as:

  • Skewed Sample – We collect information from our members so we do not use a representative sample of the population to create our charts.
  • Small Sample Size – Some of the charts we display summarize a large number of data points while others are limited to a few data points. As with any statistical analysis, fewer data points can lead to less reliable information.
  • User-Generated Content – Some of our users may provide us with inaccurate information about their careers and compensation. We have processes in place to remove this inaccurate data, but these processes are not perfect.

We cannot guarantee the accuracy of our information so we strongly encourage people to use their own judgment when evaluating the accuracy of our information. Additionally, we provide powerful reporting tools so that you can drill-into specific results to view more detailed and relevant information as well as make a more informed assessment of the accuracy of the information.

Will my information be available for others to see?

To protect your privacy, we only provide the community with anonymous and aggregated data. Moreover, we take privacy matters seriously and are well aware of the sensitive nature of the career and compensation information that people submit on this site. As a result, we do not sell, rent, trade or share your unaggregated data with anyone that does not work for us, unless required by law.

If you have additional questions, more information can be found in our official Privacy Policy.

Chart Glossary

  • Average - Averages are calculated by adding all of the measurements related to a particular group of people and then dividing that sum by the number of measurements in that group.
  • Median - The median is the value where half of the people reported higher numbers and half of the people reported lower numbers. It is a different calculation than average.
  • Salary - The sum of all wages received on a regular basis (usually weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) for one year.
  • Year End Cash Bonus - An amount of money given to an employee in addition to their salary or hourly wage. Bonuses are typically based on the performance of the employee or the performance of the company.
  • Total Compensation - We calculate Total Compensation by adding together Salary and Year End Cash Bonus. As such, our calculation does not include benefits, commissions, or non-cash bonuses such as stock options.
